History of Our Meal Program
We began this ministry back in 2009 and in the last five years we have served close to 1000 meals to over 215 families in the Southwestern City School District. We serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal down to the pumpkin pie and when we arrive it is hot and ready to eat.
We really had no idea when we started how big this would become. But each year it has grown even beyond what we thought it could be. Through the generosity of our Church family and their faithful dedication to this effort we have been able to be a blessing to Grove City and the surrounding communities in our district.
There were two goals we had in mind when we first started this. First, we wanted to make sure that those who were receiving these meals were sitting down at their Thanksgiving table on Thanksgiving Day. We wanted them to feel no different than anyone else on this holiday. We knew that this would take a sacrifice on our part to make this happen, but that was really our second goal. We wanted to provide our Church with the opportunity to not only think about their families on this day but to put someone else's family first. We didn’t know what the response would be like that first year, but from then until now our congregation has looked forward to this day every year.
We have volunteers from outside of our assembly who just want to help out and lend their support in preparing our meals. We have had baseball teams, Boy Scout troops and even neighbors and friends of our church members, come and assist us simply because they heard what we were doing and they wanted to be a part of it.
Each year it is truly incredible to watch everyone come together to make this run so smoothly. But the real reason we do this is to see the faces of the families that we are able to touch. From the elderly that we have been blessed to serve to the smallest child, that’s what keeps us coming back each year.
Our goal this year is the same. To help families who, for whatever reason, can’t help themselves.
